The key to how our EZ-POR products deliver free openings and minimal metal penetration is due to the consistency and integrity of the product and process. The process starts with integrity in the aggregate material and where it is mined. Every step of the process is controlled.
The design of the aggregate is angular, which allows for high content purity. The size and shape of the aggregate allows for optimum performance. If it were too fine you would not get free openings. If it were too porous, you would have a lot of metal penetration. The material packs tightly enough. Size and shape all work together. Not so tight you get a lot of heat transfer. If there’s too much heat transfer in the material the steel will tend to penetrate into the column of sand in the nozzle. The sizing even plays a part in keeping the nozzle somewhat clean, because the grains are large enough so as not to stick to the side of the nozzle. Due to the fact that it’s sub-angular material, there are very few contact points compared to a rounded grain of material, making the heat transfer fairly low. In other words, the steel is actually freezing off the high column of sand in the nozzle, so there’s very minimal penetration. The material packs, but won’t lock on itself.
Our EZ-POR products will not sinter together, even at temperatures over 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit. As soon as the slide gate is opened on the bottom of the nozzle, the material will drop out even if there’s a layer of steel on top. The metal static pressure inside the furnace will force the rest of the material out. Our EZ-POR products are known for their “POP”, the sound made at the time of the rapid release.
